Act within the first 30 minutes
Most UPI fraud happens within 30–60 minutes of a phone theft. The SIM block is your single most important action — it stops OTPs from reaching the thief.
Step 1: Block Your SIM (Most Important)
Every UPI transaction in India requires an OTP sent to your registered mobile number. If the thief has your SIM and your phone, they can receive those OTPs. Blocking the SIM cuts off this route entirely.
Jio
1800-889-9999
Free, 24/7. Say "block my SIM" — they verify with Aadhaar or alternate number.
Airtel
121
Press option for lost/stolen SIM. Also available at any Airtel store with ID proof.
Vi (Vodafone Idea)

BSNL
1800-180-1503
Visit the nearest BSNL office with ID for SIM block and replacement.
Step 2: Block Each UPI App
Even with the SIM blocked, do this from another phone — a family member's device or a borrowed phone will work. Each app has its own deregistration or block option.
Google Pay (GPay)
- Open pay.google.com on a computer and sign in with your Google account
- Go to Settings → Manage linked accounts
- Or call 1-800-419-0157 (Google Pay India support)
- Remove the device from your Google account at myaccount.google.com → Security → Your devices
PhonePe
- Call PhonePe support: 080-68727374
- Or email support@phonepe.com with your registered number and request account block
- Also block from another device: install PhonePe → Login → it will ask to deregister old device
Paytm
- Call Paytm 24/7 helpline: 0120-4456-456
- Or login at paytm.com on a computer → Profile → Security → Deactivate account on lost device
- Request a temporary block on all outgoing transactions
BHIM / Bank UPI Apps
- Call your bank's 24/7 helpline (listed below) and ask to freeze UPI
- Or visit your bank branch with ID — they can disable UPI on your account immediately
- NPCI helpline (if bank unreachable): 1800-120-1740
Step 3: Call Your Bank
Call your bank's 24/7 helpline and ask them to either freeze your account temporarily or block UPI/NEFT/IMPS outgoing transactions. Keep your account number ready.

Step 4: Report to Cybercrime
If money was already transferred, report it immediately. The faster you report, the higher the chance of recovery through the banking system's fraud reversal process.
Call 1930 (National Cybercrime Helpline)
India's dedicated helpline for financial fraud. Available 24/7. They coordinate directly with banks to freeze fraudulent transactions.
File at cybercrime.gov.in
File an online complaint with full transaction details — UPI reference number, amount, time, and recipient UPI ID.
File FIR at local police station
Bring your bank statement showing the fraudulent transaction. Required for insurance claims and for banks to initiate formal reversal.
How UPI Fraud Actually Happens
Understanding the attack helps you prioritize. There are three main ways a thief exploits a stolen phone:
Screen unlock + open app
High riskIf your phone has no lock screen PIN, or the thief guesses your PIN, they can open GPay or PhonePe directly. Most apps don't require a second PIN for transfers under ₹5,000.
💡 Enable a strong lock screen PIN. Use a UPI app PIN different from your lock screen.
SIM swap / OTP interception
High riskIf the thief has your SIM (or does a SIM swap at a store with fake ID), they can receive OTPs for large transfers or re-register UPI on a new device.
💡 Block the SIM within 30 minutes — this is your most time-critical action.
Saved card / auto-pay exploitation
Medium riskShopping apps with saved cards (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra) can be used for purchases if the unlock PIN is known. These don't require a UPI PIN.
💡 Delink saved cards remotely from the shopping app website on a PC.
Protect Yourself Before It Happens
Set a UPI PIN different from your lock screen PIN
Most people use the same PIN for everything. A unique UPI PIN means the thief needs to know a second code to transfer money.
Enable app lock on all payment apps
GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm all have in-app lock settings. Enable them so the app asks for a PIN or fingerprint even after the phone is unlocked.
Set daily UPI transaction limits
In your bank app, set a daily UPI limit (e.g., ₹10,000). Even if the thief gets access, they can't drain everything in one transaction.
Save all bank helpline numbers on a second device
You need to call your bank from another phone. Save the numbers on your spouse's or family member's phone now.
Use Raksha's remote lock on theft
Activating lost mode via Raksha locks the screen immediately, preventing any app access even if the thief knew your PIN — you change it remotely.
