Before You Start: What You Need
Step 1: Get Your Phone Number Back
WhatsApp is tied to your phone number. If the SIM was in the stolen/lost phone, get a replacement SIM first.
Jio
Visit any Jio store with your Aadhaar card. Same-day SIM replacement is usually possible.
Airtel
Call 121 to block old SIM first, then visit a store for a new SIM on the same number.
Vi (Vodafone Idea)
Visit a Vi store with Aadhaar. You may need to wait up to 24 hours for number porting to activate.
Step 2: Restore on a New Phone
- Insert your new/replacement SIM into the new phone
- Sign in to the same Google account you used on your old phone
- Install WhatsApp from the Play Store
- Enter your phone number and verify via OTP
- WhatsApp will detect your Google Drive backup automatically and show a "Restore" prompt
- Tap Restore โ chats restore first, then media downloads in the background
- Enter your name and set your profile photo
๐ก Media (photos, videos, voice notes) restores separately from text messages. Text messages usually restore within minutes. Media can take longer depending on backup size and your connection speed.
If WhatsApp Doesn't Show the Restore Prompt
โ ๏ธ Wrong Google account signed in
Go to Settings โ Accounts โ Add account and add the Google account that was linked to your old WhatsApp. Then reinstall WhatsApp.
โ ๏ธ Backup was never enabled
If you never turned on Google Drive backup, WhatsApp cannot restore from the cloud. Check if there's a local backup on the old phone (if you can access it via OTG or ADB).
โ ๏ธ Backup is older than expected
WhatsApp backs up daily at 2 AM by default. If the phone was lost before the daily backup, you may get chats up to 24 hours old. Weekly/monthly backup settings mean older data.
โ ๏ธ New number, not old number
If you changed your phone number, log in with the old number first, restore, then change your WhatsApp number in Settings โ Account โ Change number.
Check Your Backup Right Now
Don't wait until you lose your phone. Verify your backup is working today:
- Open WhatsApp โ tap the three dots โ Settings
- Go to Chats โ Chat Backup
- Check "Last backup" โ if it says "Never" or is months old, tap Back Up Now
- Set "Back up to Google Drive" to Daily
- Make sure "Include videos" is on if you want to keep video messages
โ A daily backup costs nothing (WhatsApp backups don't count against Google Drive storage in most regions) and takes under a minute. Do it now.
What WhatsApp Backup Includes (and What It Doesn't)
BACKED UP
- All chat messages
- Photos and images
- Voice notes
- Documents shared in chats
- Contact names in chats
- Group chats
NOT BACKED UP
- Status updates / stories
- Deleted messages
- Live locations shared
- View once photos (by design)
- WhatsApp Payments history
- Call history
After Restoring: Secure Your Account
Enable Two-Step Verification
Settings โ Account โ Two-step verification โ Enable. Set a 6-digit PIN. This prevents anyone with your SIM from accessing your WhatsApp on another device.
Check linked devices
Settings โ Linked Devices. Remove any devices you don't recognise โ the old phone may still be linked if it's online.
Alert your contacts
Send a quick message to key groups and contacts that you're on a new device. This prevents confusion if someone tries to impersonate you using your old phone.
