Understanding the Difference Between
Location History and Live Tracking
"Where are they right now" and "where have they been" sound similar but are answered by two different parts of the app — worth knowing which one to reach for.

Live Tracking: The Current Position
Live tracking is the dot on the map showing where a phone is right now, or as close to "right now" as the last successful location check-in allows. It answers exactly one question — where is this phone at this moment — and updates continuously as new location data comes in.
Location History: The Trail Over Time
Location history is a record of where a phone has been over recent days, available on paid plans. It answers a completely different question — not "where are they now" but "where did they go earlier today" or "what was their route yesterday." This is useful after the fact: confirming a route taken, checking whether someone actually visited a place they said they would, or piecing together a timeline if something went wrong earlier in the day.
Why the Distinction Matters
Live tracking answers "where are they right now" — check this for a current, real-time question
Location history answers "where were they earlier" — check this to look back, not to find someone in the present moment
A location history gap doesn't mean the phone is currently offline; check live tracking separately for current status
History is retained for a limited window (see the app's privacy policy for the current retention period), so it isn't an indefinite archive
Safe Zones Use Live Tracking, Not History
Arrival and exit alerts are triggered off the live position crossing a zone boundary in real time — location history is a separate, backward-looking record and isn't what drives those notifications.
