Why Invite Links Expire
A general "join my family circle" share link — the kind sent via WhatsApp from onboarding, Settings, or the dashboard, rather than one targeted at a specific phone number — stays valid for a limited window after it's created rather than indefinitely. This keeps old, forgotten links floating in old chat threads from quietly staying usable months or years later.
If Someone Tries an Old Link
An expired link simply won't complete the auto-join step it's designed for — it doesn't damage anything or affect the rest of the circle. The fix is the sender generating a fresh link from within the app and sharing that instead, which takes moments.
A Phone-Number-Targeted Invite Works Differently
An invite sent directly to someone's specific phone number (through the regular "add member" flow, rather than a general share link) doesn't carry the same expiry — it stays pending until it's accepted or explicitly cancelled. If access isn't working and it's this kind of direct invite rather than a general link, the fix is different: check whether it was accidentally cancelled, or resend it directly to that number instead of generating a new share link.
A Quick Habit That Avoids This Entirely
Generate and share the invite link right when someone is ready to join, rather than in advance "for whenever" — that way it's used well within its valid window, and there's no old forgotten link sitting in a chat thread to run into later.
