Google gives you 15 GB free — enough for most people
Google One's free tier (15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos) handles contacts, WhatsApp, app data, and thousands of photos. If you have more, compressed Google Photos storage costs ₹130/month for 100 GB.
What Gets Backed Up and Where
Contacts
Google Contacts (auto-synced)
Automatic if Google account is set up. Verify at contacts.google.com.
Photos & Videos
Google Photos
Must enable Backup in the Photos app. Not automatic by default.
WhatsApp chats & media
Google Drive
Must enable in WhatsApp settings. Separate from Google Backup.
App list & settings
Google Backup
Settings → Google → Backup. Restores which apps to reinstall on a new phone.
Call log & SMS
Google Backup
Included in Google Backup automatically once enabled.
Wi-Fi passwords
Google Backup
Synced with your Google account. Auto-fills on new device during setup.
Bank / UPI app data
Not backed up
UPI apps must be re-registered on a new phone with your mobile number.
OTP SMS
Not backed up
SMS backup is partial. Critical OTPs for accounts are one-time use anyway.
Step 1: Enable Google Backup
Settings → Google → Backup
Toggle "Back up to Google Drive" ON
Tap "Back up now" — don't wait for the automatic schedule
Check the "Last backup" time — it should say "Just now"
On Xiaomi/Redmi: the path may be Settings → Additional settings → Backup & reset → Google Backup. Look for the Google logo.
Step 2: Back Up Photos to Google Photos
Open Google Photos app → tap your profile photo (top right)
Tap "Google Account storage" or "Photos settings" → "Backup"
Toggle Backup ON. Choose "Storage saver" (compressed, free) or "Original quality" (counts against your 15 GB)
Tap "Back up now" — first backup may take hours if you have years of photos. Do it on Wi-Fi.
Check the backup status: the Photos app shows a cloud icon with "Backup is on" when complete.
Step 3: Back Up WhatsApp
WhatsApp → ⋮ → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup
Set "Back up to Google Drive" to Daily
Make sure a Google account is connected (use the same one on your new phone later)
Tap "Back Up Now" and wait for it to complete
Enable "Include videos" if you want full media backup (increases backup size significantly)
OEM-Specific Backup Tools
Most Indian phone brands have their own backup tools that work alongside Google. These can back up items Google misses — like OEM app data, themes, and local files.
Xiaomi / Redmi
Mi Mover / Mi CloudSettings → Additional settings → Backup & reset → Mi Cloud. Backs up to Xiaomi's own cloud — useful for MIUI-specific settings and themes.
Samsung
Samsung Cloud / Smart SwitchSettings → Accounts and backup → Samsung Cloud. Also use Smart Switch app for PC-based full backup including downloaded files.
Realme / OPPO
HeyTap CloudSettings → Additional settings → Backup and reset → HeyTap Cloud. Covers local files and ColorOS-specific data.
OnePlus
OnePlus SwitchSettings → System → Backup & reset → Local backup. Also syncs to Google. OnePlus Switch app handles device-to-device transfers.
Motorola
Google Backup onlyMotorola uses stock Android settings. Settings → System → Backup. No proprietary cloud.
