How to Enable Theft Detection
Lock on Android in India
Google's Theft Detection Lock uses on-device AI to detect when your phone is snatched and automatically locks the screen. It's one of the best free anti-theft features available — and most Indian users haven't turned it on.

What Theft Detection Lock Does
Theft Detection Lock is a Google feature that watches for the physical motion pattern of a snatch — phone in hand, sudden acceleration, then movement away from you. When it detects this pattern, it immediately locks the screen, even if the phone was unlocked in your hand at the time.
This is specifically designed for the most common Indian phone theft scenario: the grab-and-run in markets, buses, and autos where a thief snatches a phone that's already unlocked in your hand.
Which Phones Support It
Theft Detection Lock is available on Android 10 and above. It rolled out via a Google Play Services update (no Android OS update required), so it should be available on most phones in India running Android 10+, including Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and Vivo devices.
The feature requires Google Play Services to be active and up to date. If your phone uses a custom ROM or doesn't have Google services (some Chinese imports), it won't be available.
How to Enable It: Step by Step
Open Settings on your Android phone
Go to Google (or scroll to find "Theft protection" — location varies by brand)
Tap "Theft protection" or "Personal Safety"
Tap "Theft Detection Lock" and toggle it on
Also enable "Offline Device Lock" — this locks the phone if someone turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data to prevent tracking
Enable "Remote Lock" as well — lets you lock the phone from any browser using your Google account
Can't find it? Search "Theft Detection" directly in your Settings search bar. On Samsung, it may be under Biometrics and security → More security settings.
The Three Theft Protection Features — Enable All Three
Theft Detection Lock
AI detects snatch motion and locks the screen instantly. Works when the screen is unlocked.
Offline Device Lock
Automatically locks if the phone is disconnected from the internet — thieves often disable data to stop tracking.
Remote Lock
Lock the phone from android.com/lock using just your phone number. Works even if you don't remember your Google password.
What Theft Detection Lock Cannot Do
It doesn't track or locate your phone
Locking the screen prevents data access, but doesn't help you find the phone. Use Find My Device or Raksha for location tracking.
It won't catch a pick-pocket
It detects snatching — fast, forceful removal. A skilled pick-pocket who removes the phone slowly won't trigger it.
It doesn't protect a phone left unattended
If you leave your phone on a table and someone picks it up, there's no snatch motion to detect.
It can't alert your family
It locks the phone but sends no notification to anyone. Raksha's guardian circle gets notified if you trigger SOS.
Pair It with These Settings for Full Protection
Theft Detection Lock is one piece of a complete anti-theft setup. Also enable: a strong PIN or biometric lock, Find My Device, and install Raksha so your family can ring, locate, or get alerted if you trigger SOS. Together, these create multiple layers of protection for the most common India theft scenarios.
