Once summer starts, a lot of kids spend hours at the society or club pool almost every day, often with only a rough sense from parents of when they left and when they are expected back. A phone in a wet-proof bag on a deck chair does not track anyone in the water, but it does two useful things around the edges, confirming they reached the pool, and confirming they left it and headed home.

What a Family Circle Can and Cannot Do Here
Be clear about the limits first. A phone left on the poolside does not know if a child is safe in the water, that is what a trained lifeguard, a swimming buddy system, and basic pool rules are for, and none of that should be replaced by an app. What location sharing is good for is the two edges of the outing, whether they made it to the pool, and whether they left and are on their way home.
Setting Up for the Summer
Set the pool or club as a safe zone
An arrival alert confirms your child actually went where they said, especially useful if the pool is a short walk away and they head over on their own.
Agree on a rough time to leave the pool
A loose "back by 6" gives both sides a shared reference point. If the location has not moved past that time, it is a reasonable moment to check in, not an emergency.
Use a waterproof pouch for the phone, not a bare pocket
A phone by a pool is at real risk from splashes and sudden dunks. A sealed pouch clipped to a bag keeps it dry and keeps location sharing working through the visit.
Set a home safe zone for the return
The return alert is the one that matters most, it tells you the pool visit is over and they are on the way back or already home.
Real Pool Safety Still Comes First
Whatever the app shows, the actual safety rules matter more, swim only when a lifeguard or responsible adult is present, know your child's swimming ability before letting them go without supervision, and make sure they know the pool's rules around the deep end. Location sharing is a small convenience layered on top of that, not a substitute for it.
A Light Habit for a Long Summer
Over a whole summer, the value adds up in small moments, not worrying when a child is a few minutes past their usual time because you can see they are still walking home, or getting an alert that lets you start dinner right as they walk in. It is a small, quiet layer that fits around a season that should mostly just be fun.
