Summer Heatwave: Checking on Elderly
Parents During Peak Afternoon Heat
When a heatwave settles over a city, the advice is always the same, stay indoors between noon and four, drink water, avoid exertion. Elderly parents are the ones most at risk if that advice does not get followed, whether from habit, from insisting on their usual errands, or simply from not realising how extreme the day has become. A light family circle setup lets adult children know their parents stayed indoors during the worst of it, without turning into an hourly phone call.

The Risk Is Habit, Not Recklessness
Most elderly parents who go out during a heatwave are not ignoring the warnings, they are doing what they always do, the morning market, a walk, a visit to a neighbour, without registering that today is different. A location that shows they left the house at 1 pm on a day the city is under a heat alert is useful information a phone call at 6 pm cannot give you after the fact.
Setting Up for Heatwave Days
Keep the family circle you already have, no new setup needed
If you already share location with your parents, this is about paying closer attention during heatwave days, not adding anything new.
Set a home safe zone if you do not already have one
The single most useful signal on a heatwave day is knowing your parent is home and has not gone out during the peak hours.
Agree on a specific window to check the app, not call
A quick look at the circle around 1 or 2 pm tells you whether they are indoors. This replaces a worried phone call that might interrupt a nap or pull them to answer in a hurry.
Talk about the plan ahead of a forecast heatwave
A short conversation before the heat arrives, asking them to run errands early morning or evening instead, does more than checking a map after the fact.
If the Location Shows They Went Out at Peak Heat
Seeing your parent left home during the hottest part of the day is not necessarily an emergency, but it is worth a call, not to scold, just to check they are managing, carrying water, and not planning to be out long. If the location has not moved for a while afterward and it is somewhere unexpected, that is when a call becomes more urgent.
A Small Habit for a Dangerous Few Weeks
Heatwaves in most of India are seasonal but severe, and heat-related illness in older adults can develop faster than people expect. A quiet daily glance at the family circle during the worst weeks is a small habit that costs nothing and catches the one thing a phone call at the end of the day cannot, knowing in the moment, not after.
