Common Theft Spots on Campus
Hostel rooms and common areas
Shared rooms mean phones left on beds or desks are accessible to more people than in a private home — theft is often opportunistic, not planned.
Canteen and library tables
Phones left on a table while getting food or fetching a book are an easy grab in a busy canteen or crowded library.
Sports grounds and changing rooms
Phones left in bags during practice or matches are frequently targeted since bags are unattended for long stretches.
Classroom bags during breaks
Bags left in classrooms during lunch or a free period are accessible to anyone passing through, including from other sections.
Immediate Steps After Theft
Report to the class teacher, warden, or campus security first
Most schools and colleges have an internal process for lost/stolen items and can check with staff or restrict hostel/room access while it's investigated.
Ring the phone remotely
Ask a friend or family member to ring it via Raksha or Find My Device — it may have simply been picked up by another student by mistake.
Check last known location
If the phone is on and connected, check its location history — this can confirm whether it's still on campus or has left the premises.
Lock the phone remotely
Once theft is confirmed, lock it immediately to protect photos, messages, and any payment apps installed.
Ask for CCTV review if the campus has cameras
Most schools and colleges have CCTV in corridors, canteens, and hostel entrances — request footage be preserved through the administration.
File a police complaint if unrecovered
If the institution can't resolve it internally within a day or two, file an FIR with the institution's name and any CCTV reference number, then block the IMEI via Sanchar Saathi.
For Parents: What to Do From Home
Check Raksha or Google Find My Device for last known location before assuming it's stolen — it may just be misplaced in a hostel room
Call the class teacher, warden, or campus office directly rather than relying only on your child to escalate it
Lock the device remotely as soon as theft looks likely, especially if any payment app or personal data is on it
If your child is young or a hostel boarder, ask the institution about their specific lost-item policy before the next incident
Set up Raksha's family circle in advance so your child's location and phone status are visible whenever needed — not just after something goes missing
Prevention Tips for Students
Never leave your phone unattended on a table or bed
Even a "quick trip" to the counter or washroom is enough time for a phone to go missing in a busy hostel or canteen.
Keep hostel rooms locked, even for short absences
A large share of hostel thefts happen because rooms are left open "just for a minute" during the day.
Use a strong lock screen and short auto-lock timeout
This limits what a thief can access even in the minutes before you notice it's missing.
