What to Do If a Family Member's
Phone Shows Offline for Hours
"Offline" is the word that turns a normal day into a worried one. Before assuming the worst, there's a short, sensible checklist to work through — most of the time the explanation is completely ordinary.

The Most Common, Least Worrying Explanations
Dead or very low battery
By far the most common cause — check the last known battery percentage before it went offline. If it was already low, this is almost certainly it.
Poor signal or no data connectivity
Basements, elevators, remote areas, or a crowded venue with network congestion can all cause a temporary "offline" status that resolves on its own.
Airplane mode or Do Not Disturb settings
Some DND configurations or accidental airplane mode toggles can affect how location updates, without anything being wrong.
App killed by battery optimization
On Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, and other Indian OEM phones, aggressive battery optimization can stop background location updates even with the screen unlocked — a setup issue, not an emergency.
What to Check, in Order
Check the last known location and battery level
This alone often explains everything — a phone that went offline at 4% battery near home is not the same situation as one that went offline at 80% in an unfamiliar area.
Try calling or messaging directly
A missed call or unanswered message on its own isn't unusual — but combined with offline status, it narrows things down.
Check with anyone who might be with them
A colleague, friend, or family member at the same location can often confirm everything's fine faster than any app can.
Consider the context
Were they heading into a known low-signal area, a flight, a movie theater, or a meeting where phones are put away? Context usually explains an offline gap.
Escalate if the gap is long and context doesn't explain it
Several hours offline with no reasonable explanation and no contact from anyone who's seen them is when it's time to start actively reaching out — call their workplace, school, or last known contacts.
Preventing It Going Forward
If OEM battery optimization is a repeat cause, exempt Raksha from battery optimization in your phone's settings so it can keep reporting status in the background reliably. This one-time fix on Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, and similar phones resolves the majority of unexplained "offline" gaps for good.
