How to Explain a Missed Alert
Without It Becoming a Fight
"You said you were home but the app didn't show it" can escalate fast if it's read as a lie. Almost always, it's a phone setting — not a person hiding something.

Start From the Technical Explanation, Not the Accusation
A missed safe zone alert, a location that looked stale, or a notification that arrived late has ordinary technical causes: battery optimization killing the app in the background, a moment of no network signal, or GPS taking a minute to reacquire indoors. None of these require anyone to have done anything wrong. Leading with "the app probably didn't fire because of X" instead of "why didn't you tell me" changes the entire tone of the conversation.
Check the Technical Explanation First
Was battery optimization or an OEM battery manager (Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Samsung) restricting the app in the background?
Was the phone in a low-signal spot — indoors, underground, a dead zone — right around the missed alert?
Did the location eventually catch up a few minutes later, suggesting a delay rather than a total miss?
Has this happened before on this specific phone, suggesting a setup issue rather than a one-off?
If any of these fit, it's very likely the explanation — not evidence of anything else.
A Better Way to Open the Conversation
Instead of "the app says you weren't home," try "the app didn't show an alert — were you actually home around then?" That framing gives the other person room to simply confirm the facts rather than feeling accused, and it opens the door to fixing the actual technical cause together instead of the conversation turning into a standoff about honesty.
When It's Worth Digging Deeper
If missed alerts keep happening despite the battery and signal settings being fine, and specifically around moments someone seems reluctant to explain, that's a different and legitimate conversation to have — but it's worth ruling out the ordinary technical causes first, since they explain the overwhelming majority of missed alerts in practice.
