Shows a Location That Doesn't Make Sense
A dot that's stuck, jumping around, or identical to someone else's almost always has a boring explanation. Here's how to work through it.

First, Don't Panic
An odd-looking dot on the map triggers an outsized reaction because it looks like it should mean something is wrong. In practice, the overwhelming majority of these cases trace back to something mundane — a Wi-Fi network, a stale GPS fix, a background restriction — not a missing family member. Work through the checklist below before assuming the worst.
The Checklist
Are two family members showing the exact same dot?
Most likely they're on the same home Wi-Fi network, which can report an identical position. Not a bug — see the guide on shared Wi-Fi below.
Hasn't the dot moved in hours, even though they're clearly out?
Check whether the app has been battery-optimized or force-stopped on their phone — that's the most common cause of a stale location.
Is the dot jumping between locations that are impossibly far apart?

Did this start right after someone got a new phone or number?
A fresh device or SIM sometimes needs the app reinstalled and permissions re-granted before location reports reliably again.
When It's Worth a Direct Check-In Instead
If none of the above fits, or the person also isn't answering calls or messages, stop troubleshooting the app and just reach out directly — a phone call answers the question faster than any setting ever will. The app is a convenience layer on top of real communication, not a replacement for it.
